PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: As we enter a New Year, I want to give you some favorite quotes to reflect on, that will hopefully assist you in separating temporal urgency from eternal reality. Most of these quotes provide direction about how we should live our days in response to the admonishment of Psalm 90:12, which says, "Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom." May 2015 be that kind of year for you.
JOHN WESLEY – "Give me one hundred men who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God, and I care not whether they be clergyman or laymen, they alone will shake the gates of Hell and set up the kingdom of Heaven upon the earth."
DANIEL WEBSTER – "The greatest thought that has ever entered my mind is that one day I will have to stand before a HOLY GOD and give an account of my life."
MOTHER THERESA – "You will NEVER know that JESUS is all you need until JESUS is all you have."
ANNIE DILLARD – "How we live our days is…how we live our lives."
OSWALD CHAMBERS – "The honor of the NAME of JESUS is at stake in our lives."
MATTHEW HENRY – "It ought to be the business of every day to prepare for our final day."
MARTIN LUTHER – "There are 2 days on my calendar: THIS DAY AND THAT DAY."
POPE INNOCENT IV – Said to Thomas Aquinas, "The Church no longer has to say, 'SILVER AND GOLD HAVE WE NONE.'" Thomas Aquinas replied, "NEITHER CAN WE SAY, 'RISE AND WALK.'"
TIM KIZZIAR – "Our greatest fear as individuals and as a Church should not be of failure, but of SUCCEEDING AT THINGS IN LIFE THAT DON'T REALLY MATTER."
UNKNOWN – "If God were to remove the Holy Spirit from the Church today, 95% OF THE WORK OF THE CHURCH WOULD CONTINUE UNAFFECTED."
GEORGE CAREY – (Former Archbishop of Canterbury) "If the Church of England were a human being, the last rites would be administered at any moment."
LARRY TOMCZAK – "Wouldn't it be a terrible thing today to be alive and not know what God is doing? You know what would even be worse? TO BE ALIVE TODAY AND KNOW WHAT GOD IS DOING AND NOT BE A PART OF IT."
MILTON HUBBARD – "God is looking for people who are willing to do ALL of His will without regard to cost, convenience, comfort, consequence or comprehension."
GOD TO JOHN WIMBER --"YOU'VE SHOWN ME YOUR MINISTRY. NOW I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU MINE."
JESUS – "I MUST BE ABOUT MY FATHER'S BUSINESS."
When James Calvert went out as a missionary to the cannibals of the Fiji Islands, the ship's
Captain tried to turn him back, saying, "You will lose your life and the lives of those with you if you go among such savages." To that, Calvert replied, "WE DIED BEFORE WE CAME HERE."
